Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences Texas A&M University
Session Description: The purpose of this session is to show the early success of a pharmacy reimbursement model used to improve medication safety. Made possible by a partnership between Public Health, the state pharmacy association and a PBM, community based pharmacists in Iowa were incentivized to provide one of two covered disposal products and associated education on medication safety in the home to any patient seeking to dispose of old or unused medications during a visit to the pharmacy. Pharmacies would then be reimbursed $7.50 for each drug disposal fill and for providing education on the importance of prompt and proper medication disposal. Funding for this program is made available through the State Opioid Response (SOR2) grant, funded by Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)
Learning Objectives:
understand one model of pharmacy reimbursement for drug disposal tools and education at the time of dispensing
learn how pharmacists feel about providing drug disposal tools and education to their customers
have a better understanding of the various drug disposal solutions available on the market today and how they differ
